Virtuoso
Shafaatullah Kahn
To Perform At Centenary Sat., Feb. 12, 2005 /
8pm
"Virtuoso... Classical Purity... Astonishing
individuality..Shafaatullah Khan explored the rhythmic intricacies
of percussive sound in a way that was both intellectual and
poetic.... Creator as well as performer...." The
Washington Post
From his auspicious debut at the age of eleven, performing for the
Queen of England, to a lifetime of performance milestones, virtuoso
Indian musician Shafaatullah Khan has continued to thrill and amaze
his audiences with the exuberant and mysterious sounds of the classical
heritage of Indian music. On Saturday, February 12 at 8 PM, the Centenary
Performing Arts Guild will present Shafaatullah Khan in concert on
the Centenary Stage in Hackettstown.
Descendant of one of the most respected and renowned musical families
of India, Khan has toured the world over the last two decades, playing
at such distinguished venues as the Acropolis in Athens, the Royal
Albert Hall in London, the Great Hall of the Kremlin, the Smithsonian
Institute in Washington, D.C. and Lincoln Center in New York City.
His own heritage may be traced back over 400 years to the golden
age of the arts in 16th century India, and his own performances
have often been met with “thunderous ovation” (The Chandigarh
Tribune, INDIA).
Khan’s rare talents include an unparalleled excellence on
not one but three instruments – the Sitar, the Surbahar and
the Tabla. His performances have been hailed as “superb, (The
London Times), and “Exuberant.” The Cork Examiner (Ireland)
acclaimed his skills as “a driving power[which] entered the
performance when Shafaatullah’s marvelous fingers showed us
the rhythmic complexity of the music and enthralled the audience.”
Khan’s contemporary work has been recently showcased in the
compelling new film, “ Pulse: A Stomp Odyssey,” a piece
inspired by the Broadway sensation STOMP, currently playing at theatres
nationwide and abroad. His recent CD release entitled The Rhythms
of Nature was produced by Dr. Deepak Chopra. On these historic recordings,
Shafaatullah performed on the sitar/surbahar, and accompanied himself
on the tabla; a first in the history of Indian Classical Music.
As part of the 2004-05 International Music
Series at The Centenary Performing Arts Guild, and the and
the Centenary Performing Arts Guild Outreach Programs, guest
artists at the Guild will be shared with regional schools
throughout the season. A special performance by Shafaatullah
Khan will be presented for approximately 400 students of the
Hackettstown Middle School on Friday, Feb 11.
This concert is a special concert exclusively available for
the Hackettstown Middle School students and is not open to
the public - the only public concert of Shafaatullah Khan
will be on FEB 12 at 8 PM at the Centenary Theatre.
