Another Antigone - Nov. 7-22, 2003By A.R. GURNEY

"The funniest Greek tragedy I've ever seen," theatre critic Russ Thomas once wrote about A.R. Gurney's contemporary drama, Another Antigone, which opens November 7 at the professional Centenary Stage Company in Hackettstown. In this modern reinvention of a timeless myth, the struggle between unyielding civil authority and rebellious individual expression resonates with present-day issues, including a glimpse of nuclear disarmament concerns. Judy Miller is a young idealistic student whose petition to rewrite the Sophocles' Antigone pits her against her unyielding Classics professor; making for a good deal of sparks, and a piercing look at modern education and campus culture.

Set on the campus of a small New England college. Another Antigone tells the story of a classics professor who finds himself in a battle with a young , idealistic student over a term paper on Sophocles. The student would rather write a new stage version of Antigone. The battle of wills escalates and soon begins to mirror the conflict in Antigone itself. Gurney, as always, offers a witty, comic and provocative examination of a vexing problem besetting present-day academia.

"But the actress [Christina Odermatt playing Judy] is able to underline Judy's seriousness of purpose. There's as much fire in her eyes as there is in her belly."

"The actor [Mohrman] beautifully conveys the increasing nervousness that's bubbling below the veneer of confidence."

"Rust [playing the dean] creates a woman who makes clear that the groves of academe can indeed be a bloody battlefield."

"He [Davie played by Brian Maslow] has a marvelous stage presence and a rugged charm that suggest he'll go far."

Another Antigone - Nov. 7-22, 2003The Playwright

Known for a gently sardonic humour, A.R. "Pete" Gurney has captured the tone of American culture for over 30 years in such highly praised plays as The Dining Room, The Cocktail Hour, Sylvia and the popular Love Letters. He is the recipient of many awards for his work, including the Drama Desk Award, two Lucille Lortel Awards and the Rockefeller Award.
