Music From China Ensemble
Sat., Feb. 14, 2004    8pm

Music From ChinaThe ethereal and melodic strains of "silk strings and bamboo winds" will fill the air this February when the Music From China Ensemble comes to the Centenary Stage with it's distinctive assortment of fiddles, lutes, plucked Zithers, bamboo flutes, and hammered dulcimers. Hailed as "musicians of extraordinary accomplishment and sensitivity," the Music From China Ensemble brings the ancient sounds of the Sheng and the Pipa, and the compelling music of the 900 year old ergu, as it invokes the vitality of folk music and traditional opera of China, performing "with grace and virtuosity," [New York Times].

Executive Director Susan Cheng and her ensemble perform for audiences throughout the east coast and cities across the U.S. from Princeton University to The Smithsonian Institute, and The Boston Early Music Festival to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Music From China collaborates with composers to develop new works that, expand the boundaries of traditional Chinese music, and regularly premieres it's new works series at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City.
