Judy Sheehan's charming and comical Alice in Ireland will be the first play of 2003 at Centenary Stage Company. Alice in Ireland by Judy Sheehan and directed by Barbara Bosch, will be the next production at the professional Centenary Stage Company in Hackettstown. Alice in Ireland runs February 28th to March 15th at the Centenary Theatre, on the campus of Centenary College. Alice in Ireland is the comic misadventures of a modern day "Alice" who decides to make a pilgrimage to Ireland to get in touch with her "roots". Following the guidelines of the Big Book of Irish Weddings, Alice must travel through Ireland on her way to wed her fiance in her famous mother's castle. Along the way she revels with lively soccer fans in an Irish pub, she's charmed by a handsome Irish lad, she tours the Ring of Kerry, where Irish fairies captivate her. On a journey of discovery Alice is transformed by the land of enchantment. The play Alice in Ireland has won the Reva Shiner Full-Length Play Contest and the Siena College International Playwrights' Competition. It was the 1999 critics' pick of the Kalamazoo Gazette. Developed in Centenary Stage Company's own Women Playwrights Series (WPS), Alice in Ireland is the comic misadventures of a modern day "Alice" who decides to make a pilgrimage to Ireland to get in touch with her "roots". Playwright - Judy Sheehan Playwright Judy Sheehan, who will be in residence at CSC in February/March, began her career as one of the co-creators of the long running hit, Tony N' Tina's Wedding. During her time with the Tony N' Tina's Wedding company, Judy's work included translations and adaptations of Eugene Ionesco's Stories For Children, which afforded her the opportunity to meet and work with this great writer. Currently, Judy is the playwright-in-residence at New York's prestigious Looking Glass Theatre, which produces her work every season. Past productions include Women In Hats, Aphrodite's Dungeon, and A Carole Christmas, an hilarious and satirical play about the Martha Stewart phenomena. At the Looking Glass Theatre Judy has collaborated on a trilogy of children's musicals, I Was A 9-Year Old Blues Diva, I Hate Spinach, and I'm So Incredibly Bored. Her play, Bright Girls, Stupid Lives, was a critical and popular success in Portland, OR where it was nominated for a prestigious Drammy Award. Judy was commissioned by Centenary Stage Company to write the popular Murder At Waterloo for the historic Waterloo Village Dinner Theater, which ran for three seasons. Excerpts of Judy's plays have been included in the popular anthology, Monologues For Women By Women, and in its sequel, Still More Monologues For Women By Women (Heinemann). Director - Barbara Bosch Director Barbara Bosch has directed nationally and internationally. She recently directed the Pearl Theater Company's Off-Broadway production of Nathan the Wise. She has directed in New York at the International Fringe Festival at Dixon Place, Here, Circle East, and regionally at the Magic Theater, Sacramento Theater Company, Marin Theater, P.C.P.A., Williamstown, and at Shakespeare festivals in California, Texas, Maine, Utah, Alaska and Wisconsin. Her work has also taken her to Great Britain, the Netherlands, and the Czech Republic. Barbara is on the theater faculty of Hunter College, City University of New York.
Carolyn Coulson-Grigsby is Assistant Professor of Theatre and Humanities at Centenary College. She received her B.A. in Theatre Arts from Santa Clara University in California, studied acting at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, and earned her M.A. in Medieval Studies from the University of Connecticut, where she is currently a Ph.D. candidate specializing in medieval drama. In 2000, she joined the teaching staff of both Centenary College and where her teaching areas include movement, dance, acting, and theatre history. Performances Alice in Ireland runs February 28th through March 15th at CSC. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 PM, Sundays at 2:30 PM, Thursdays at 7:30 PM (Family Night with a two-for-one rush seat available at the door only), with additional matinee performances on Friday Feb 28 at 2:30 pm and Wed, Mar 5 at 2:30 pm. Ticket prices for Alice in Ireland range from $12.50 to $20.
