Urbie Green Quintet with
Kathy Green on vocals

July. 31, 2004 / 8pm
Jazz In July Concert Series

Urbie Green Quintet with Kathy Green on vocals - July 31, 2004 concertOn Saturday, July 31th at 8pm, the third concert the Urbie Green Quintet with Kathy Green on vocals.

Urban Green is rated among the greats in the field of jazz. A musician’s musician, a trombonist’s trombonist, a jazzman’s jazzman - he is all of these rolled into one.

Urbie’s big break came in an offer to play with Jan Savitt, one of the nation’s top dance bands. Word-of-mouth praise among fellow musicians spread from coast to coast and Urbie had offers from several top-name bands. In 1947 he joined Gene Krupa for four years. In 1950, he became part of Woody Herman’s Third Herd and in ‘54 he won the Down Beat International Critics Award for New Star.

Throughout the 1950’s, Urbie became one of the most sought after trombonists for recording and club work in New York City. He is a multiple winner of Most Valuable Player Award from the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and perhaps the most recorded musician of all time. He has recorded with Gene Krupa, Woody Herman, Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Leonard Bernstein, Frank Sinatra, Billie Holiday, Tony Bennet, Peggy Lee, Pearl Bailey, Ella Fitzgerald, Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, Barbara Streisand, Perry Como, Aretha Franklin, Quincy Jones, J.J. Johnson, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Burt Bachrach, Buck Clayton and Herbie Mann, to name a few.
