The summer will swing in Hackettstown this year as the "Jazz in July" series returns to the air conditioned Centenary Theatre on the campus of Centenary College for four consecutive Saturdays. The concerts feature four major jazz artists/groups who have established themselves as great players in the world of jazz. All concerts take place on Saturday nights in July/Aug 2008 starting on July 12th at 8:00 pm.

Houston Person
Houston Person performing as a part of the 2008 Jazz In July Concert Series on July 26, 2008

Performing July 26th, Houston Person is the natural heir to the Boss Tenor crown worn so long and so well by Gene Ammons. In the more than twenty-five years that he has been a working bandleader, Person has taken his show to most points on the globe.

A traveling jazzman in an era that has found that particular species a veritable rara avis, Person does it all himself. He books his own tours, hunts up the new clubs, has the phone number of every major concert promoter on each continent and produces his own albums, truly the vertically integrated jazzman.

Houston Person was among the guttiest of the gutbucket saxophonists of the soul-jazz golden age. Houston Person has a tenor sound that is about as pure as it can be. While other tenor men in jazz have had unique sounds that are always described as "jazz saxophone" sounds, Houston's sound is pure. It is one of the most lush, elegant, tenor sounds ever heard, and the man plays the instrument with feeling, but always in tune. He doesn't "scoop" the tones, he just nails them with a legato finesse.
