The Play
It’s summer in the south and the temperature is rising in one small town in Renee Flemings’ rich new play,
Strange Weather, which will be the second presentation in the Centenary Stage Company Women Playwrights Series
on Wed., Apr 16 in Hackettstown. August Wilson and William Faulkner collide in this Southern gothic tale with a comic
edge, about a fundamentalist Baptist family with many secrets, including a daughter who is about to experience a virgin
birth.
Refreshments and lively discussion with the playwright and cast follow the presentation.
About the Playwright
New York playwright Renee Flemings is originally from Louisville, Kentucky and the small southern towns
of her youth populate her plays. Her plays have been featured the Roundabout Theatre’s “Different Voices” program,
the Samuel French Festival, and the Neighborhood Playhouse’s “Beyond the Pale” program. Strange
Weather was the recipient of the 2007 Time Warner Award for Emerging Playwrights. She created plays by commission
for the “Lower East Side Chronicals,” a theatrical history of Manhattan’s lower eastside, and
has had more than 20 plays in production throughout the metropolitan region and Philadelphia.

About Women Playwrights Series
CSC’s Women Playwrights Series, now in its 16th season, is dedicated to providing a working forum
for the unique and underserved voice of women writing for the theatre today. One of the few programs of its kind,
taking new plays from the development process on to full production, the WPS has been hailed by playwrights as
unique and essential to the development of their craft and work. The WPS offers writers the opportunity to work
with a professional director and actors during a short rehearsal period, which culminates in a script-in-hand performance
for a public audience. Discussions following the presentation further enable the playwright’s development
of the work, as they receive feedback from the audience. Each year one play from the WPS is selected to go on to
full production in the Centenary Stage Company main-stage season. Audiences in the 2008 series will have the opportunity
to vote for their favorite work in consideration of production.
