2013 Spring Festival Of Shows

Sweet Charity, The Pajama Game and Tom Sawyer

“Take it from me, who’s been regularly attending high school musicals for more than four decades: I’ve never seen the likes of what the Centenary Young Performers achieve.”

The Centenary Stage Company’s Young Performers Workshop presents their Spring Festival of Shows with a week full of musical favorites. The Festival will run May 31st through June 9th at the Little Theatre on the campus of Centenary College in Hackettstown.

This season’s selections will include The Pajama Game, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, and Sweet Charity. The Young Performers Workshop (YPW) has been called "The most professional kids troupe around!" by the Star Ledger. The workshop has been lead by Broadway, film and television veteran, Michael Blevins, for over 20 years. YPW is dedicated to the enrichment of young lives through experience in the theatre arts, and serves as a venue for cultivating young theatre performers between the ages of 8 and 18.

Sweet Charity
Book by Neil Simon
Music by Cy Coleman
Lyrics by Dorothy Fields
Based on an original screenplay by Federico Fellini, Tullio Pinelli and Ennio Plaiano
Produced for the Broadway Stage by Fryer, Carr and Harris
Conceived, Staged and Choreographed by Bob Fosse

Have you ever known a girl who wanted something so badly, that she tried too hard to get it? Meet Charity, the girl who wants to be loved so much, that she has lost sight of who she is. Charity sings, dances, laughs and cries her way through romances with the "animal magnetism" hero, the "ultra-chic continental" hero, and the "impossible-to believe-but-he's-better than nothing" type hero. Neil Simon has a particular talent for looking at the truly amusing side of life. Wonderful musical numbers include Big Spender, If My Friends Could See Me Now, and Dream Your Dream.

Date/Time: June 1 at 8 pm, June 2 at 1 pm, June 7 at 8 pm, June 8 at 5 pm, June 9 at 7 pm

The Pajama Game
Book by George Abbott and Richard Bissell
Music and Lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross
Based on the novel 7 1/2 Cents by Richard Bissell

The dangers of a workplace romance are explored to hysterical effect in this romantic comedy. Conditions at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory are anything but peaceful, as sparks fly between new superintendent Sid Sorokin and Babe Williams, leader of the union grievance committee. Their stormy relationship comes to a head when the workers strike for a 7 and a half cent pay increase, setting off not only a conflict between management and labor, but a battle of the sexes as well.

Date/Time: May 31 at 8 pm, June 2 at 4 pm, June 8 at 8 pm, June 9 at 1 pm

Tom Sawyer
Adapted by Sara Spencer
Based on the story by Mark Twain

In this literal adaptation of a legendary tale, all of the major adventures of Tom and his friends are brought to the stage. This version features Tom's story in its entirety-the famous whitewashing, the schoolroom episodes, the graveyard experience, the pirate adventure on Jackson's Island, the return to their own funeral at the village church, the trial of Muff Potter, finding and losing a treasure, getting lost in MacDougall's Cave and the rejoicing of the village at their rescue.

Date/Time: June 1 at 2pm, June 2 at 7 pm, June 8 at 2 pm, June 9 at 4 pm
